6. Hiking in Nong Khiaw and Vang Vieng
In the northern region of Laos, you’ll find a breathtaking mountainous landscape perfect for hiking enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you’re a beginner or seeking a challenge, Laos offers a variety of trails to explore. You’ll encounter stunning viewpoints, hidden waterfalls, and picturesque camping spots to relax and unwind. Nong Khiaw and Vang Vieng are two must-visit destinations for hikers in Laos.
Given Laos’ unfortunate history as the most heavily cluster-bombed country in the world, it’s crucial to stick to established trails and avoid venturing off on your own. Make sure to stay on the designated paths throughout your hike. To ensure you stay on track, download offline maps from apps like maps.me and OSMAND. For added safety, consider hiring a guide or joining a camping group tour, especially if you’re new to hiking.
7. Rock Climbing
Explore Laos’s natural rocky Karst mountains, where you can ascend vertical rock surfaces extending for kilometers. With rock formations suitable for climbers of all skill levels, Laos boasts some of the highest quality crags, according to experienced climbers. Thakhek is the hub of climbing activity in Laos, boasting over 477 routes. Other notable climbing destinations include Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, and Nam Hinboun.
To discover climbing spots across the country, consult The Crag and Mountain Project lists. You can also connect with fellow climbers at The Green Climbers Home, where you can participate in courses and gather valuable information about climbing opportunities throughout Laos.
