You can reach the Everest Base Camp or EBC via various routes, but the game is to choose the right one in the right season. In this comprehensive guide, we will explain all possible routes in detail. Fret not, for we will cover all bases (pun intended) and give exhaustive details including maps, elevation charts, and multiple other insights.
We aim to equip you with the knowledge needed to make an informed decision and tailor your EBC adventure as per your preferences. So, lace up your boots and get ready to explore the awe-inspiring landscapes and rich culture of the Everest Khumbu region.
Note: You can reduce the number of days on the trekking routes, but we do not recommend doing so. Proper acclimatization plays an important role at high altitudes. Stick to the basics, and do not forget the three thumb rules.
- Do not ascend more than 300-500 m per night
- Include a rest day for every 800 – 1000 m ascent
- Hike high sleep low

The Classic Route With Helicopter Return (10 days, 44.3 Miles/ 71.3 Km)
Here, you trek on the classic route and can enjoy breathtaking aerial views from the heli ride. The helicopter ride will be part of your return journey, which will be from Gorakshep to Lukla. The ride will shorten your trek by 3 days. If you’re looking for a shorter adventure, this option is great. The Helicopter ride will cost you $350 – $500 per person if shared among 5 people, while a private charter costs $2000 – $2200. You can book via Nepal Helicopters.
The Traditional Route Via Jiri (Kathmandu – Salleri – Khari La – Puiya/ Paiya – Phakding, 15 Days, 87 Miles/ 140.3 Km)
A few years back, people used to start their trek from Jiri. Later, the roads were constructed till Nungthala. Now, the roads are extended until Khari La (Tham Dada Jeep station) and this is where the jeeps drop you. Road construction to Lukla and Chaurikharka is in progress and is expected to be completed soon.
This is the old route that people usually use if their flights get canceled or if they’re on a budget. The route is not popular because Jeep rides are extremely bumpy and it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
Days | Trek Route | Distance | Duration | Altitude
Day 1 | Kathmandu to Salleri (bus or jeep) | 273 Km | 8 Hours | 1400 m – 2390 m
Day 2 | Jeep ride from Salleri to Khari La. Trek to Puiya/ Paiya | 3.8 Km/ 4.9 Km | 5-7 Hours, 2-4 Hours | 2390 m – 2730 m. 2810 m (Puiya/ Paiya)
Day 3 | Puiya/ Paiya to Phakding | 16 Km/ 15 Km | 7-9 Hours | 2810 m – 2500 m
Day 4 – Day 13 | Continue the Classic Route from Day 2 |
EBC And Gokyo Lakes
There are two ways to do the EBC and Gokyo Lakes trek, as a loop is created from Namche. You can either go clockwise or anti-clockwise on this trail. The latter is easier wherein you cross the Cho La Pass from Dzongla, cross the Ngozumba Glacier, and reach Gokyo. The other way around involves a steep ascent that requires relatively more effort. Also, note that since Gorakshep is crowded and the altitude is high, people only stay for a day and return.
On this route, you cross the Cho La Pass and Ngozumpa Glacier, summit Gokyo Ri, explore the high-altitude Gokyo Lakes, and see beautiful 8000ers of Cho Oyo and Makalu peaks.
Please note that we do not recommend you cross the Ngozumba Glacier post-noon. Refer to the “Important Things to Know” blog that explains why.

EBC And Three Passes
EBC and Three Passes Trek is also a loop that can be done either clockwise or counterclockwise. The most scenic yet challenging of all the above-mentioned routes involve crossing both – the Khumbu and Ngozumpa glaciers and 3 high-mountain passes. The three high mountain passes are
- Kongma La, 5535 m – said to be the most difficult one
- Cho La Pass, 5350 m – equally challenging to Kongma La
- Renjo La Pass, 5360 m – easiest among the three

Reaching Lukla Via Different Routes
Fly From Kathmandu
The best and easiest option is to fly from Kathmandu to Lukla directly. But the flights operate only when clear weather is observed and during the off-season. To know more about the Lukla flights, refer to this FAQ blog that’ll answer your queries.
You can also take a helicopter ride from Kathmandu to Lukla. A private charter would cost you $2900 while a shared ride costs $500 per person.
Fly From Ramechhap
During May and October, flights operate from Ramechhap to Lukla, not from Kathmandu. The trekkers have to take a bus or jeep ride from Kathmandu to Ramechhap which usually takes about 4 hours.
A few mountaineers combine EBC with summiting the Island Peak.
