As the sun sets, these markets transform into nightly bazaars filled with twinkling lights, creating a lovely and lively atmosphere. Perfect for an evening spent in exploration and indulgence, these markets create an ambiance showing Thailand’s street culture at its finest.

On the list of our very favorite activities in Thailand, meandering through the local and night markets is an experience worth having. This blog highlighted the must-visit local and night markets we discovered across Bangkok, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai.

Local & Night Markets in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chatuchak Market

Chatuchak market

Titled the world’s largest market contained in a single complex, this market has over 30,000 stalls in the Chatuchak Market. Located in the capital city of Bangkok, the weekends are the perfect time to explore this marketplace. Promising to fulfill any wish you might have, right from getting a tattoo to buying clothes and souvenirs, the prices quoted here are highly reasonable. The market also comes with a vibrant food street in the complex, and it takes at least half a day to explore the narrow alleys fully. They are connected via the MRT Station Kamphaeng Phet and BTS Station Mo Chit.

Chinatown

China town, Bangkok

One of the largest markets in the world dedicated to Chinese products is Chinatown in Bangkok. With several Chinese eateries and shops on either side of the street, you can find people standing in long queues to purchase items or sample their favorite dishes. The tokens are issued on a first-come-first-serve basis. A place that lights up during the night, crowded with curious tourists wandering about, Chinatown is a paradise for seafood lovers. This is the most consumed item here.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Running over 32 km across the city of Bangkok with 200 branches is the Maeklong River. Daily commerce runs seamlessly thanks to the traditional wooden long boats that navigate through the canals. Tourists majorly visit the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market to soak in the atmosphere of the water markets, satisfy their shopping cravings, and get a taste of the local delicacies. Fair warning that the souvenirs and food here are a little overpriced, which is the norm for a tourist spot. The market can also be explored on foot, so wear your walking shoes.

Sunday Night Market, Chiang Mai

The Sunday Night Market in Chiang Mai, called Tha Phae Walking Street or the Wua Lai Walking Street, stretches across six different zones. Zone 1 starts from Moon Muang Road, with Zone 6 extending up to Wat Phra Sing, Three Kings Monument, and Puttisopon School on the other side.

Chiang Mai night market

We’ll paint you a picture of what you would come across when walking along the Sunday Night market. You will encounter artists drawing live portraits, visitors getting street massages, handmade products put up for sale, and people playing instruments. The shops and food stalls appear endless, with every step revealing the next set of spots to explore. You can buy souvenirs at an affordable price here. Voted as the best marketplace in Chiang Mai, it stands true to its name and is only open on the weekends.

Jing Jai Market

A tourist favorite is the Jing Jai market, which is the one frequented by the locals. Best visited during the weekends in the early morning hours, ideally from 6 AM to 3 PM. It is an authentic farmer’s market where you can see organic fruits, vegetables, food, beverages, and handicrafts. With welcoming passageways that are wide and filled with lively music guiding your wanderings, the market has a lovely charm. And if you are a fan of local produce, then you should make time for this spot.

Kalare Night Bazaar

Kalare night market, Bangkok

A cultural performance is performed live every evening. This show starts at 6:30 PM and lasts until 11 PM every night. The awaited highlight of the Kalare night bazaar in Chiang Mai is a colorful and captivating performance that beckons to be visited. The dedicated dancers change their costumes for each song and sync their performance seamlessly to the music. So, we suggest you grab a few bites and sit back to enjoy the performance. As a bonus, you have everything ranging from Indian to Italian. And if you ask us, we’d suggest the pork with honey!

Ploen Ruede Night Market

Ploen Ruedee night market, Bangkok

Chaing Mai also hosts the Ploen Ruede Night Market, lined up with eateries shaped exactly like the square, with live music performances breezing by you all day, and they even have chairs pulled up! Open from 5 PM to 12 AM with the music reaching far and wide, be prepared to navigate through quite a crowd that it inevitably attracts. The edibles cost quite a bit compared to its neighboring Kalare Night Market.

Pattaya Walking Street

Patttaya Walking Street

The red light district in the city of Pattaya is a walking street known for its sexual entertainment. True to its purpose, Pattaya Street hosts a hoard of prostitutes, with men and women working on the street. Located at the end of Pattaya beach, it is filled with live music, pole dances, discotheques, sex shows, bars, restaurants, and hotels. This area is closed to vehicle entrances every night from 7 PM to 3 AM.
